Allan Cunningham letters, 1825-1839.

The collection consists of seven letters: to Sir, 19 Sept. 1825, agreeing to see his work; to Duncan, 11 Feb. 1829, commending his friend James Pagan as a printer; to Gentlemen, 4 Nov. 1829, with regrets that he will not be able to attend a meeting; to Sir, 2 Sept. 1830, about a request to copy a bust; to A.W. Callcott, 17 Sept. 1832, asking for information about Sir George Beaumont for a book; to Mary Russell Mitford, 9 July 1834, praising her work; to Sir Robert Inglis, 9 Dec. 1839, sending regrets that he may not go out on the advice of his doctor.

Allan Cunningham was a Scottish author. Trained as a stonemason, he made a name for himself by passing off his own poetry as a collection of traditional Scottish ballads. As a professional man of letters, he had diverse interests, writing plays, novels, short stories, collecting and editing anthologies, and writing biographies and other nonfiction, but was probably most successful as a poet.
